Yorkshire wool operatives report discontent in Sydney mills
The Yorkshire Evening Post reports Australia House officials are surprised by claims that Yorkshire wool textile operatives who arrived in Sydney in March 1947 under a three year contract with John Vickers Ltd are unhappy with conditions and returning home. Officials say migrants were described as very happy earlier. Huddersfield couples Mr and Mrs Hargreaves said they were heartbroken by factory conditions. They described work as terrible and prehistoric and said locals were unhelpful. They claimed cost of living was twice that of home. Australia House is investigating the mill where the Har greaves and 60 other Yorkshire workers labored.
