Wool Sales Deduction Act Case Still In Court
In the High Court Chief Justice Sir John Latham refused an Australian Primary Producers Union bid to stop the Commonwealth from collecting income tax in advance from wool cheques. The decision does not end the issue but indicates the government action is not wise to hamstring inflation control. Many wool growers oppose the law citing their pockets, while authorities note the government intentions. The Treasurer says if invalid, funds will be returned. the debate centers on pre payment during wartime expenditures. The piece argues the wool industry's prestige suffers amid the tax dispute.
