Holidays and royal events spark satirical notes
A lighthearted column lampoons endless holidays and calls for daily leisure while joking about a law to make every day a holiday. It notes sugar scam ads, motor vehicle growth, and parliamentary transparency debates, then shifts to small town anxieties about smallpox coverage and local music bands.
Northam Races Produce Close Finishes and Public Favorites
The public picked three winners Venetian King Moralis and Saucy Bee at Northam on Wednesday while Lavy Romaria was a popular fancy for several races. Greenlove defeated Lady Romaria in the Galloway by a head as Eaton’s four year old mare carried heavy weight. A special Northam train was planned and York races offer a strong program with competitive sport anticipated.

Where the Bank Fails and the plight of settlers
An early 20th century critique traces the Agricultural Bank's refusals to fund basic crops for settlers like Jones. Despite years of land clearing and improvements, credit vanished, railway delays persisted, and rents rose while the bank offered only further improvements funding. The piece argues liberalising bank credit to cover ploughing and seed is essential for survival.
