From Our Correspondent PMore rain helps crops while grubs remain destructive. Machinery arrives for harvest as over 209000 bags of grain are expected to be dispatched. Rail yards stay busy with daily wheat trains. A local note mentions Stork’s errant visits and a lighthearted warning to beware Mr Stork.
The Jennacubbin Race Club held its annual meeting on the 7th with Mr P Lawler presiding. The balance sheet shows over £40 profit for the year, £15 spent on enclosure additions, and reduced bank overdraft to £194. The club notes strong finances after buying the freehold of the course and spending £250 on enclosure and buildings. Racing dates set for October 13 1920 February 6 1921 and March 30 1921. Officials reappointed include P Lawler F A Rose and W Eaton, with Judge J H Bowen and others. Secretary L H Bowen to resign due to distance. applications opened for Sept 2.
Goomalling defeated Dowerin by 55 to 54 in a fast tight match amid few winds at Lockyer arena. Ward starred for Dowerin with flawless kicking from Dowerin goals and Plaisted created many Goomalling scores, while crowd temps rose over crowded play and umpire errors. Wyalcatchem beat Minnievale 2 16 to 2 3 as another lively regional contest concluded.
Messrs Elder Smith and Co Ltd held a fortnightly stock sale at East Northam yards on Tuesday. Low turnout and cautious bidding followed uncertain wool markets and farmers faltering in their work. Prime merino ewes and aged forward lambs received limited bids. pigs and cattle also showed subdued demand with modest prices recorded.
An 19th century advertisement touts a wooden great peppermint cure for chronic chest complaints. The text claims quick relief and underscores belief in herbal remedies as a universal remedy for respiratory ailments.
The usual services will be held at the Church of Const next Sunday. Mr sicdier will speak at both services. After the evening service the ordinance of believers baptism will be observed.
