Shooting Fatality at Pithara

A 21 year old man, Arthur James Craig, died when a loaded pistol fired while he and his father prepared a cart near Pithara. An inquest opened at Pithara as the body was brought to Northam for interment. The funeral proceeded to Northam Cemetery with Rev Shaw officiating and Mr Purslowe arranging arrangements.

Northam Municipal Council Reviews Fire Brigade Demonstration Plans

The Northam Municipal Council held a Thursday meeting with Acting Mayor Dunkley and eight members present. The Inter committee proposed to urge the Volunteer Fire Brigade captain to push a rozeikeld demonstration and asked the Repatriation Committee to fund £0.25 for prize money, plus arrange water service and cinder-wrack if needed, while quarterly reports on fire brigade and ambulance operations were requested. Financials showed balances across general, health, and loan accounts before adjournment.

RSA Appeal Opens In Northam With Procession And Concert

The RSA Appeal opened in Northam with a foresight procession ending at the Town Hall led by the Salvation Army Band. Speeches by Carter Dunkley and Spark followed at Avon Street along with musical items by Mesdames Stewart Flower the Concert Party and the Salvation Army Band. Returning soldiers Fire Brigade and novelty parties joined the procession. About £10 was raised for the Fund. Next week’s events include a Picture Show at Palace Theatre Euchre Party and a Town Hall Dance with further announcements to come.

A settler in the Wongan Hills district told a Wat Australian representative that farmers face a black outlook with wheat acreage dropping below half of last season. High prices, costly gear, and labour press farmers into debt worsened by dry conditions and bushfires, though improved weather next season could help those with early, dry wheat. He urged Wheat Pool relief with an extra sixpence for 1916-18 to cover super and essentials before it's too late.
