He argued for reprisals against Boer rebels, including burning houses sheltering culprits, mass punishments, and death sentences for crimes against civilized warfare. Hospital Meeting in Golden Reports Work and Funds
The Golden Hospital Society held its annual meeting at the school house in Golden on Monday at 8 p.m. About 80 attended. Mr S Hurtison was appointed chairman and Mr James Wood secretary. Directors Rutherford and Robbins were elected. The secretary and medical superintendent presented the financial balance sheet for the year ending June 30 1908 and notes on hospital work. The report notes 111 patients treated across 1504 days, average 18 days per patient, and a surplus of 1008.85. Expenditures rose 35 01 mainly due to a new windfall outfit. Revenue increased 448.51 though pay patients fell by 230.09. The grounds were beautified and water supply improved for irrigation. The report urges replacement of a burnt-out furnace and acknowledges staff efforts, with thanks from the secretary Mr G Robbins. The medical superintendent notes 111 patients that year with 100 male and 11 female, 1404 hospital days, outcomes including 100 cured, 2 improved, 1 not improved, 3 remaining, 2 deaths. A library fund supported purchases of standard works. Access improved by a sidewalk from Kicking Horse bridge. The report records upcoming improvements and thanks to staff. A later note mentions Dowager Empress Frederick’s death and a Canada Gazette proclamation on the Pacific Cable Act.
