Budget Speech Reveals Narrow Deficit For 1936
Premier Mr. B S B Stevens presented the fourth Budget of the present Parliament to the croched Legislative Assembly on Tuesday night. He forecast a deficit of 1 750 000 for the year ending June 30 1936 with estimated revenue of 15 817 196 and expenditure of 47 007 196. The plan includes wage tax relaxations weekly wages under five pounds and a 10 percent cut on rail freights for wheat dairy produce from November 1 with special income tax relief for incomes up to 250 a year plus a one third reduction in the Sydney Harbour tolls. The final year deficit was 2 298 023, slightly better than forecast, with the Railway Department showing marked improvement. The budget also increases country council road aid and scales back the public works program as private employment rises.
