Thrip pest watch urged by NSW entomologist

The NSW Department of Agriculture entomologist Mr W B Gurney says thrips are unlikely to become a major pest this year but growers should remain vigilant. Remove weed growth to prevent thrips, monitor early stone fruit and apples for damage, and apply kerosene emulsion as a cheap effective spray if conditions threaten thrips development. He notes repeated reminders rather than certainty of need this season.

Motor Taxation Pushes for Quarterly Instalments

The RMA presses the government to allow motorists to pay motor taxation quarterly rather than 12 months upfront. The association argues the plan would revive idle vehicles and sees windscreen stickers, not paper certificates, to show registration period. This could also help detect expired registrations.

Questions in the House Bush fires prevention debate

In the Assembly last week Mr Bennett pressed the Chief Secretary on Bush Fires Prevention Act regulations. Captain Chaffey noted early regulations were sweeping and unjust, but said they were rewound, now seeking targeted rules for fire risk areas. He and Lt Colonel Bruxner discussed omnibus rates for country passenger services and a review of motor vehicle taxation to ease burdens for isolated districts. The Minister for Transport was urged to lighten penalties on rural services while ensuring road use costs remain equitable.
