Winter crops aided by 160 spray irrigation plants in Hunter Valley

Newcastle Agriculture Instructor Mr G T Dawson reports at least 160 spray irrigation plants in the Hunter Valley, many active in winter. Farmers expected limited use in warm weather, but winter fodder and vegetables now require the system. Lush pastures help cattle, milking cows gain value from even a single mouthful. Some vegetable growers are planting strawberries hoping for profits. Land policy talks include War Service Land Settlement Act amendments to compensate for compulsory land acquisitions at current values, with possible changes to National Security land sale regulations.

Block Day at Dungog Butter Factory Faces Milk Shortages

Thursday was a block day with no milk accepted for dispatch to Sydney. Many prefer Sunday block days, noting it has been long since milk was refused. In past flush seasons there were two to three block days in a week. With Gloucester and Manning River districts added to the milk pool, a return of block days may occur if rain is good, aided by the government's sweet cream ban freeing more milk for the market.
