Man Who Could Not Reform In Colonial Australia
A penal system in New South Wales failed to reform Benjamin Stanley, a convict who drifted from brutal treatment to crime. After years on road gangs he, with Frederick Garrett, plotted to rob elderly farmer Campbell. The robbery ended in Campbell’s murder. Garrett confessed later, while Stanley faced trial and defense with evidence tying him to the crime in Maitland and Clarence Town.
