A Road Safety Council bulletin notes pedestrians were the only road user group to show more fatalities and injuries in the year ended June 30, 1841. Increases occurred mainly in country towns and rural areas with declines where safety programs ran for over a year. Lettuce Growing for NSW Soils and manuring tips
Lettuce requires abundant humus water and nitrogen. Heavy animal manure applications of 20 to 100 tons per acre are common in New South Wales. Manure should be decayed to destroy weed seeds. Lime or dolo mite is advised on acidic soils with 1 ton per acre normal dressing and 5 cwt per acre annually for heavy feeders. Superphosphate can hasten maturity and seed set. A mix of two parts superphosphate and one part ammonium sulfate works well. Top dressing with poultry manure or ammonium sulfate is essential. Liquid organic manure helps at all growth stages.
