The Buffalo Fly is a small dark grey parasite attacking cattle and horses in northern Australia. It feeds on blood, remains on hosts, and spreads mainly via infested cattle movements. Life cycle spans seven to eleven days in summer, longer in winter, with flight limited to about two miles. The insect targets bulls and older cattle, infesting eyes and neck, and is less persistent on calves.
