Gloucester School of Arts Club Annual Meeting

The first annual meeting since the club’s revival was held with President W. W. Hawdon presiding. Members were few as the annual report praised progress from the 1926 fire to the 1938 building completion. The committee highlighted a £110 sale of the old site and a £150 contribution from the Returned Soldiers League, with a fine piano bought for £50 and a new kitchen and electric wiring. The opening on 19 July 1938 drew public support. The report notes 54 members after opening, a growing lounge and library plans, and a promising financial position. The honorary treasurer’s report outlined receipts and expenditures, and the meeting adopted new accounting rules. The committee elected included P. Anderson, W. Hawdon, J. McRae, and others. Horner was appointed auditor. The election of officers followed, with Hawdon as President and talks of appointing a Secretary.

The Curse of Gambling Speech at Methodist Church

Mr Marsh warned against gambling at a Methodist gathering, arguing modern life prioritizes material progress over spiritual values. He analyzed lottery odds, citing the Cesarwitch sweepstakes and its payouts, stating the risks far exceed rewards and linking gambling to poverty, vice, and societal decay. He defined sound exchange as labor, bread, and love, urging attendees to reject gambling as unbrotherly.
