Britain Food Aid Figures Stir Debate in Parliament

A Sydney Legacy Club address cited that Australia’s meat and butter exports to Britain fell over half since the war began. Prime Minister Curtin asserted misunderstandings in official figures, noting 223 000 tons of meat in 1938-39 and 178 000 tons in 1943-44, while butter exports appeared 97 000 tons in 1938-39 but possibly 45 000 tons in 1943-44. Curtin warned against overstated exports and urged sustaining Britain’s food supply, urging Australia to seize its primary-producing potential rather than merely emptying ice-chests.

Regional Councils debated in Legislative Assembly

In the Legislative Assembly Mr D H Drummond questioned the Government’s plan to create 17 regional councils in Central and Eastern Divisions. He asked whether the councils would be a super local government or merely a centralised gesture, and why existing local bodies would lose authority without real powers.
