Agricultural Notes Report for September
The District Agronomist, Mr. J B Noonan, reports September weather was warm with rain in the second week and heavy storms on the 11th and 12th. Pastures improved, especially sown and renovated areas, with good winter feed, though floods damaged some. Sub clover in Glouce ster-Wallamba areas thrived, while heavy floodplain paddocks recovered slowly. Maize and summer fodder planting faced delays due to wet conditions. Jap Millet growth slow but rain will help. Vegetables faced planting challenges though beans, squash, and roots were sown. tomato seedling shortages affected Port Macquarie. A field trial by H W Burton Bradley and Son used the soil fumigant D.D. to control eelworm on a red volcanic loam. Lime works at Wingham delayed by floods, but demand for pasture lime grows.

Festival of Colour at C of E Flower Show
The Annual Church of England Flower Show last Thursday drew a large crowd as lush displays of roses and irises delighted visitors. Archdeacon Williamson officially opened a day of musical numbers and stalls run by local groups, with profits expected around £200.

Newcastle writer fellowship opens to all Australia entrants
The old Hunter Valley contest was dropped as insufficient interest. A new nationwide fellowship welcomes writers across Australia with 2000 word stories, prizes of five and two guineas, and an entry fee of one shilling. Bazaar Dance Caps Off Broadbent Orchestra Night
The bazaar closed with a very enjoyable theatre dance on Thursday night featuring Broadbent's Orchestra providing music. The event showcased numerous entries in cookery fancy work and handwork with several winners noted for cakes scones and embroidered pieces.
