War news recounts vipers of policy and battles as Britain faces oil and air threats. Roosevelt considered stepping in as peacemaker amid mounting European tension and Soviet front activity while a Dutch steamer was sunk in the English Channel.
A neutral report says Germany would back a liberal attitude toward the proposed Polish state with demilitarisation yet autonomy. The RAF is fully established in France for weeks with all aircraft types in use. Japanese troops claim to have captured Chonshan, Sun Yat-sen’s birthplace, and defeated 10 Chinese divisions at Siushi Wiangsi Province. The Chinese claim they have mopped up Japanese forces south of the Heinchiang River.
The Government urges the public to continue duties as if no war. most comply but a fact remains.
The Transport Minister Col Bruxner warns that wartime thoughts distract pedestrians and drivers, predicting more accidents this year due to absent mindedness. He urges a deliberate effort to concentrate on street safety, noting pedestrians have admitted war thoughts affected crossing.
Mr A J Burd from Murwillumbah argued at the Lismore conference that tenant farming and short leases hinder fodder conservation. He said many agree modern methods are needed but short leases deter spending on conservation, and overcoming this could remove about 75 percent of the obstacles faced by reformers.
