Warm Welcome for War Heroes in Melbourne Parade

Melbourne greeted the 17th Australian Infantry Brigade with a large wartime parade drawing about 1,800 soldiers in jungle green uniforms and fixed bayonets. At Town Hall the Governor General and General Blamey reviewed the salute while Major-General Savige led the march early, later succeeded by Brigadier Moten. The brigade is famed for valor in the Middle East Greece and for battles against Japan around Wau and Salamaua.

Government guidance on horseshoes and fencing wire shortages

A ministerial letter to Hon J P Abbott MP explains that civil horseshoe shortages arise from heavy defence demand and manpower diverted to machine gun shoe production. It notes talks with suppliers who deal via merchants and urges Abbott to submit outstanding orders to the Deputy Controller Materials Supply Sydney for assistance. It predicts defence demand may ease and suggests hand made shoes and expediting fencing wire deliveries from Army surplus stocks.

Pensions Cut as Cost of Living Drops

A one shilling fortnightly reduction in old age pensions will take effect on November 25, tied to cost of living figures under the Pensions Act. A similar one shilling cut to the basic wage was recently announced. The Deputy Commissioner of Pensions noted the change is statutory and reviewed every three months. Last year 260,000 Red Cross members were mobilised in the Commonwealth, with the Society handling 602,000 prisoner of war letters and 38,000 missing men inquiries. Half of every battleship, tank, gun, shell, bullet or bomb is scrap metal.
