75 Sheep to the Acre in Jemalong Drought Era
The Lachlan district showed irrigation could boost output after 1902 droughts. Jemalong Station owner N A Gatenby built a weir on the Lachlan River and irrigated 200 acres of lucerne to feed 15,000 sheep through the 1902-3 drought, yielding 75 sheep per acre for four months. Lucerne reached 3 to 4 feet tall with crops of wheat and oats also succeeding. Department of Agriculture records echo these results.
