Lyons Signals Possible Flour Sales Tax Plan in Canberra

In Canberra on Wednesday Prime Minister Lyons hinted at a potential sales tax on flour as the method to address the wheat price controversy. He said the final decision would come early next week, noting the industry’s support would come only if the public bears the burden. Lyons argued a broad tax rather than fixed pricing or an Austra pool, while warning that a 2,000,000 grant would unbalance the budget and affect the community. Growers later weighed in, estimating a tax of 5/18 per ton would yield modest per bushel gains but raise costs for bread.
