Nansen Dies at 67 After Arctic Feats and Peace Work
Norwegian explorer and statesman Fridtjof Nansen died at 67. His 1893–96 Arctic expedition went farther north than any prior attempt to reach the North Pole. He later taught zoology and oceanography, helped Norway win independence, served as ambassador in London, aided famine relief in Russia, and received the 1921–22 Nobel Peace Prize.
