Crowning of King George VI and Queen at Westminster Abbey drew over a million spectators along a brilliant procession route. The return to Buckingham Palace faced heavy rain as the empire watched, while the coronation unfolded with divine grandeur and public awe.
London May 12 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth were crowned at Westminster Abbey in a vast imperial display. More than a million spectators watched the procession with crowds sleeping on streets through the night. Fog cleared as the ceremony began though heavy rain fell before the royal return to the palace. Foreign princes and princesses and troops from across the Empire joined the pageant in one of Landon s most colorful spectacles.
London reports a likely royal tour of the dominions not before 1939 or 1940 after loyal addresses from DominionPrime Ministers and Ministers expressing hope for the visit. The King and Queen favor such a tour, possibly starting with India for the Durbar in autumn 1938, then proceeding to the dominions at a later date. Coronation Day celebrations in Sydney drew mass crowds and brilliant displays.
Gloucester hosted a Coronation Rodeo with a large afternoon crowd despite chill wind and threatening clouds. Gates grossed about £270 to £380 with an estimated £180 net profit. officials led by President Tom Hicks and ringmaster Perce Haxan managed a long, well run program. MLA CE Bennett praised the event and the Returned Soldiers League, while riders from New England and mid-north districts competed in stock drafts, open events, and novelty acts including the Mounted Cossacks and a bucking bullock display.
Gangat school hosted a successful social evening attracting many youths from nearby districts. Supper followed a long night of dancing and bidding by the clock, promising a substantial boost to the school library fund. Empire Day featured songs and recitations by children and a long speech by Mr H Paff on purity in home, throne, and nation. After a picnic lunch, sports games and a honeymoon race for adults drew cheers, with Mr Mulligan and Mrs Murray winning. Afternoon tea closed a bright, profitable day.
