Wage Increases From New Commonwealth Award
After two weeks of conference in Melbourne Australian Provincial Press Association and the Printing Industry Employees Union agree on a Commonwealth award governing the mechanical side of newspaper and printing production. The award to take effect in May raises wages by 10 to 20 shillings weekly for more than 600 workers and preserves the 5 shilling difference between metropolitan and country rates in New South Wales. The award covers composite newspaper and jobbing offices, commercial printing houses, and piecework offices with piecework terms to be settled soon. American prohibition campaign planning and a Senate investigation cost estimate are noted.
