Rearing Horse Kills Driver in Melbourne Street Incident

In Hanna street South Melbourne last week a horse pulling a delivery van killed James Price aged about 45 and injured Charles William Bracey. Bracey was struck by the horse and taken from the van after Price’s fatal kick to the head. Bracey’s left leg was cut. Price died at hospital.

Council seeks ban on export of inferior butter

The Clarence District Council for the Primary Producers Union urged the Central Council to stop exporting inferior butter grades. A. S. Henry claimed Australian butter quality lagged Danish, with London buyers using poor grades to lower prices. NSW would lend L. T. Macinnes to the federal effort for three years to raise butter standards. margarine, seen as a threat, was blamed for whale oil content and a pink-colour law for real butter appearance was proposed.

Motoring Taxation Across Australia Revealed

Figures from NAMA show state authorities collected a total toll of about £8,000,000 in the year ended December 31, 1940s, with New South Wales paying the largest share and Northern Territory contributing a smaller amount. Petrol fuel duties added about £9,750,000 in revenue from major users.

Heroism of Skipper and Crew in Teeland Storm

Captain Harrison and crew endured the fiercest Teeland coast storm in 25 years. The trawler Earl Kitchen faced hurricane force winds, Arctic rain, and huge seas that flooded the engine room and plunged the ship into darkness. After 58 hours at sea, the storm abated and the crew, including injured mate John Harrison and hand John Hetherington, were brought to safety as a rescue ambulance waited offshore.
