Labor Ban on Nonessential Goods in NSW Looms
The minister said NSW will ban nonessential manufacture in about two months to free labor for war industries. Victoria and South Australia began bans on 21 February, covering the same range. No compensation is offered to owners of idle plants. NSW will proceed only after absorbing 4000 to 5000 unemployed and as war undertakings require up to 20,000 workers. The ban may then extend to imports and exports under constitutional allowances.

Sydney beef supply to rely on Queensland cattle
Beef cattle authority Mr A J Tanner warned Sydney faces a growing beef shortage as droughts reduced fat cattle in the Riverina Hunter and southern districts. Victoria had no spare stock while northern cattle were only fattening after rains. Four to five months needed to reach market condition, forcing reliance on Queensland herds noted for excellent quality.
