Upper Bowman Dance Supports Red Cross War Chest
A February 27 Upper Bowman Hall dance drew strong attendance despite petrol shortages to aid Red Cross and War Chest funds. Net proceeds of £20 were split between the Red Cross and War Chest. Prizes included 10 shilling orders, fowls, and auctioned hampers and vegetables with lively bidding led by Bede Quinn. Local figures donated goods, and many volunteers supplied food and hospitality.

Valerie Eastcott, 15, of Mineago Street Blackheath, was bitten on the neck by a snake that climbed onto her bed while she slept on the verandah. She was taken by Ka toomba District Ambulance to Anzac Memorial Hospital in satisfactory condition. the snake escaped.
