Isolated settlers choose Sunday Island in Kermade group
Alfred Bacon of Devonport and two others have chosen life on Sunday Island, part of the Kermade group, taking passage aboard the yacht Ngataki which has since returned to Auckland. They plan to end their days there amid huts, supplies, and Alsatian dogs to curb rats, a pursuit echoing Bacon’s earlier 1926 isolation bid. The island, occupied briefly over a century, has long been abandoned, with notes of past caretakers including the Bell family and insights from Tom Iredale of the Museum staff who compared it to Robinson Crusoe’s setting.
