Suffragist Fanatic Dashes at King's Derby Horse

A suffragist named Elizabeth Davison leapt onto the turf during the English Derby as Anmer bore down on the finish, striking the horse and causing a dramatic somersault. Jockey Jones was knocked unconscious with concussion and a fractured rib, hospitalised, while the King and Queen witnessed the episode. Davison, a London University BA with prior prison terms, had a history of suffragist outrages, including hoisting in the House of Commons and a prison escape. A film of the incident circulated, and Queen Mary inquired about the horse’s condition. Some witnesses say the act was deliberate. others argue she sought attention through trespass.
