Free French and Imperial Troops in Syria Clash
Leadon June 8 report says British forces attacked southern Syria and Lebanon, with Free French under General Catroux in the van. Vichy claims 45,000 troops in Syria and insists no Germans there, while Allied forces total about 20,000 and push north from Lake Tiberias and from Trans-Jordan. General Catroux vows Syrian and Lebanese independence if inhabitants join against Germany, and the British promise trade freedom and lifting of the blockade.

France Betrayed by Leaders under German Pressure
In a Sunday broadcast J B Priestley condemns France under Petain as surrendering democracy to a Nazi aligned regime. He argues French leaders, seeking honor by collaborating, have abased liberty and equality, surrendering sovereignty and accepting a satelite role to Germany, with Mussolini cast as a contrast to French leaders.
