Mixed catch yields fox and rabbit in same trap
In Tenterfield district Mr Allan Somerland found a three quarter grown fox and a rabbit trapped together, each caught by a front leg, the fox eating half the rabbit. He notes it is his first mixed bag after occasional two rabbits in one trap. Another local, Mr E Campbell, reports varied first-night and second-night hauls among 12 rabbit traps, including a blue cattle dog and cats, with only one rabbit in 24 chances.

Unique case marks Maitland cruelty trial over calf clipping
In West Maitland Court last week Percy Glen Legos of Newcastle faced four counts of cruelly treating calves and mutilating them. Convictions were recorded on one count with a £10 bond for 12 months. Three other charges were proven but dismissed under Crimes Act provisions due to Legos being a public figure and his good character. He was ordered to pay substantial costs. Lloyd Everingham of Vacy also faced similar charges but all were dismissed for good character. The case centered on clipping calf teats to protect strain, with conflicting expert opinions on pain and necessity. Legos asserted 20 years of practice and claimed calves showed no distress.

Compulsory Electrical Inspections Could Return
The State Electricity Authority weighs reintroducing compulsory periodic checks on electrical installations. War shortages paused the act, but thousands of home systems have deteriorated since, and inspectors could condemn many existing setups if inspections resume soon. An official cited the move as an important item under review.
