South Africa mobilises industry for war effort
South Africa mobilises industries on a war footing to supply domestic needs and aid Britain. The defence vote totals £46,000,000 with major spending inside the Union as central ordnance factories are created. Unions cooperate, wage standards protected, and SA’s highly mechanised army relies on government built steelworks. The 1940 output surpasses £100,000,000 with diamonds, chrome, asbestos, manganese, wool, maize, wattle bark and explosive industries all directed to support the war and postwar plans.
