Burma railway funds questioned for POW compensation
At the Ninth Biennial Conference of the British Empire Service League a proposal to use sale proceeds from the Burma railway to compensate prisoners of war was rejected by the British Government. The government said proceeds would be divided between Malaya, Burma, and the Netherlands East Indies and not used as POW compensation. In a separate note, a farmer from Sudbury, Peter Gage, described how he mounted a second-hand car radio to his tractor to listen to BBC Radio Times broadcasts, gaining access to British and foreign stations while working.
