War News in Brief Germans Face New Breakthroughs

In Russia the German retreat threatens two major Red Army breakthroughs toward the Baltic States in the north and toward Romania in the south. Stalin marks the Red Army’s 26th anniversary by pledging greater production and forces to drive Hitler to catastrophe. Allied raids strike an aircraft factory in south Germany, the day’s heaviest daylight attack from combined British and Italian bases. Reports of a new German attack on the Allied beachhead south of Rome emerge as recon photos show reduced enemy ships and aircraft at Rabaul. In Burma British forces push from Arakan, and U.S. and British leaders foresee the war against Germany possibly ending next year. Churchill says Britain and Russia back a strong independent Poland with western frontier fixes and compensated German territory. Britain, the U.S., and the Soviet Union embargo loot recovered gold transfers.

VAOC Posts to Report Weather Across Australia

All observation posts of the Volunteer Air Observers Corps are now emergency weather reporting stations. They will provide complete weather condition reports to the RAAF when required, aiding forecasts for flying and planning special exercises. Observer corps receive full instructions for reporting rainfall wind cloud and sky details to the RAAF Meteorological Services.

Churchill Warns Invasion Plausible After Bombing

In the House of Commons on Tuesday Mr. Churchill stated that air offensives form the basis for invasion and that the war will not end this year. He urged no sorrow or rejoicing but preparation and effort, reviewing RAF Navy Army work and aid to other nations including the Soviet.
