That Old Boss Cow Causes Debate At English Farm Talk

Professor Petersen spoke to a large English farming audience urging serious study of cow psychology. He argued cows maintain a social order and must choose to enter milking parlors, warning that forcing them in harms behavior. Petersen, America's dairy expert, toured England at Farmer's Weekly invitation and was warmly received.

Farm Labor Crisis Highlighted at NSW Milk Board Inquiry

During the Milk Board inquiry the Labor position on dairy farms was deemed unsatisfactory with many dairymen working over 60 hours weekly without holidays or recreation. Yet gallonage per cow rose, signaling improved efficiency and lower real wage costs despite higher wage rates. Evidence was presented by H Gedden of McGarvie Smith Farm Badgerys Creek on feed consumption and concentrate prices since 1943.

Great obstacle to NSW farmers urged on capital interest

The Milk Zone Dairymen's Council general secretary Mr L C Turton last week called the lack of a reasonable allowance for interest on invested capital a major hurdle for farmers in New South Wales. He pointed to a 4 per cent figure used in a Butler costs inquiry and argued it is inadequate. He noted a cost survey of brickmaking supported by the Taxation Commissioner suggesting 10 per cent is acceptable for interest on invested capital.

Deadwood Dick the untamable brumby of Bwemp Oak

The tale recalls the wild brumby Deadwood Dick born near Bwemp Oak and driven by young Tom Barrick in the 1890s. The horse defied riders with high jumps and unbroken spirit, slipping tack and returning to the paddock, and though many tried, the narrator never tamed him. He ends his days roaming the hills, a legend of persistent horseflesh.
