Food subsidies in UK total £137 million yearly

In reply to a House of Lords question Lord Woolton said subsidies on foodstuffs total about £137 million per year. For Jan 1 to March 1942 the rate was £127 million annually after profits on non subsidised items. Main subsidies: flour and bread £40m. meat £23m. potatoes £20m. sugar £13m. milk £2m. National Milk and other schemes £18m. eggs £11m. tea £3m. milk products bacon ham carrots and others £7m. Policy helped stabilise living costs.
