Fateful election year opens Canberra session in tense climate
Canberra reports outline a fateful year as Parliament resumes after Christmas with Labour facing rebuffs at state elections and inside federal politics. The coming session promises clashes over foreign policy with Evatt and Menzies likely to dominate debates, while bills on shipping, civil aviation, and the New Guinea territory are on deck. Public reaction to socialisation plans and the Mulgoa aborigines incident colors the political mood as the government weighs supply needs and a no confidence motion against the acting Speaker.
