Zebu cross cattle boost Australian cattle industry
Bulletin 172 notes Zebu or Brahma cattle native to India perform well in tropical climates. Australia imported 18 Zebus in 1833, and by 1941 there were over 8000 half and quarter-breds. Zebus cope with heat and ticks, tolerate drought, and reach market size earlier than British breeds, potentially expanding tropical cattle production.
