Random notes recount Copeland and Barrington days of gold diggings and early travel. The piece recalls old memory keepers, mail coaches, and the 1880 Barrington Bridge, plus tales of floods, funerals, and local pioneers like Norman Shaw and Norman Beaton, with notes on Lucerne, the Gloucester Buckets, and Aboriginal rites.
Norman McLeod, born in Scotland, grows with nine siblings before the family migrates to Australia. The account recalls droughts and floods in 1848, wheat farming at Barrington, and a move through Maitland and Raymond Terrace. It details the Lambing Flat riots and Chinese relations, leading to mining rules, a rare digger uprising, and Norman’s role on the Mining Board amid harsh licenses and arrests. The narrative follows his life from Dunmore to Barrington, with travels to the Darling, Bourke, and Moree, through wheel-throbbing work, injuries, and a long return to Barrington to end years in the district.
