Tragic Irish Mutiny at Port Macquarie 1821
In Port Macquarie a hundred years ago Irish soldiers in Captain Alliman's detachment clashed with rebels led by Terence O Brien and James Vaughan. After brave pursuit and mutinous outbursts, Vaughan was killed by a shot from his cousin O Shea during the Battle of Croppys Hill, ending with Vaughan buried near the harbor and the episode remembered as a grim frontier memory.
