Barrington and Stratford Shire discuss defining a water supply area. A plan to provide subsidies via the Minister for Local Government is pursued after sending proposals to Mr. R. L. Fitzgerald. Citizens urge timely action while tests verify Stratford water viability.
Mr Frith of Lismore blasted the Federal Petrol Tax in the Dacistative Assembly saying it was little less than robbery. He cited 1947-48 receipts showing £15,750 collected and £7,500 returned to states with most funds going to Commonwealth use. He urged that tax proceeds go to the states, with major shares for roads and shires to fund bridge and culvert work, arguing shires could not complete road projects within their limits without higher allocations. He warned that many shires could spend the entire amount on one year yet fail to finish by roads and access work. He stressed roads are vital to country life and urged additional funds for shire road development.
Dr. Breese challenged the placement of a public lavatory on King Street claiming wrong site and access. Council approved adjustments including doorway screen, interior seating, glass roof ventilation, electric light, mirror near basin, and smooth plaster walls at a quoted cost of 33.
Gloucester Shire Council confirms proposed rates for the coming year with general rate set at 3d in the pound in effect after debate. The meeting adopts general, loan, and local rates with plans to repay loans and fund road and public works while aiming to reduce overdraft and maintain services.
