Upon returning to the City I was given a clipping from The Gloucester Advocate about a proposal to alter the Pacific Highway route via Karuah and Bullaidelah. The document discusses local reaction and possible implications for the route changes.
A pastures protection report shows the Gloucester district saleyards inspections for the year ending June 30. Total cattle inspected reached 27 431, dairy cattle 12 072 were checked, and 2 50 cattle were deemed suspect and forwarded under movement orders.
At the Ward's River Red Cross Branch annual meeting on July 13 the Hon Secretary's report notes a 25 member year 1949 50 with five card parties and three tennis tournaments. The sewing output included three mittens, knitted washers, three shawls and two pairs of sex. The Treasurer reported income of 50 0 11 with expenses of £5 5 0. The president thanked officers and members for support and anticipated continued help. Office-bearers re elected: President Mrs G Mackay Vice-President Mrs H Reif Hon Secretary Mrs R Parish Hon Treasurer Mrs K Edmonds Auditors Messrs K Edmonds and J Ebbeck Publicity Officer Miss M Brown.
Preparations begin for Stroud Shire Council elections after dissolution in March. Administrator Mr BH Dane leads. seven ridings replace the prior mix. Shire Clerk L G Allen notes undecided election date and mid September target for readiness. An interim flood relief grant of £1000 funds road repairs to Markwell and Ballahdelah cross-road. Dane approves kerbing drainage works and a timber bridge at Hawke and Divide Streets. £200 set for Tea Garden Play Centre improvements at Team Gardena.
The Gloucester Pastures Protection Board met on Thursday August 3 with Director Abbott absent. Messrs. Hawkins Bros asked for timber cutting on reserves. the board upheld prior no-permission policy and discussed royalty issues with the Department. The meeting also approved Wingham Lime Co to obtain a title to TS R 17692 and planned extending Rabbit Inspector leave. Acting Secretary M Newton received praise for his service, while A D Crowfoot began duties as Secretary on August 1, 1950.
Newcastle Aero Club officials visit Gloucester Shire, examining a paddock for a potential aerodrome five miles from town on the Pacific Highway. They note a 3700 foot north south runway, surface suitability, and cost estimates for clearing trees, filling holes, and laying a grass strip with voluntary labour.
