Britain seeks substitutes for 2,000,000 tons of annual pulp by using oat straw and other cereal straws, esparto grass substitutes, reeds from Norfolk and Suffolk, bracken and potato haulm trials, and papyrus. Indian bamboo already supports pulp, with Africa and Asia sources explored for elephant grass, lalang, tam bourne grass, rice straw, linseed straw, and other agricultural wastes.
