Sleeper Inspection Proposal Rejected by Railway Dept

Hon Walter Bennet t M L A urged that sleepers be inspected at bush depots before sending to the railway depot to avoid paying cartage on condemned sleepers. The Comptroller of Stores explained such inspection is impractical due to costs, small proportion of outright condemned sleepers, and risk of letting inferior sleepers pass. The current system benefits cutters and yields general satisfaction, so the request cannot be acceded.
