The South Central Baseball League held its organizational meeting at Carberry on April 27. Teams for the summer include Carberry, Austin, Cypress River, Holland, MacGregor and Glenboro Canucks. The season starts May 18 with schedules to be published later.
The Glenboro Agricultural Society Racing Committee reviews progress for the July 22 and 23 harness meet. Improvements include barn upgrades with lean-to shingling and wiring, new race track hub rail materials, four new bleachers, and construction of betting booth, judges stand, concession booths, and display board along the north side. Community groups are invited to contribute, with Morley Cullen as contact. A Kinsmen Sweepstake race is planned, and a July 24 baseball tournament sponsored by the Curling Club and Chamber of Commerce will round out the weekend.
Manitoba Jr A champions Dauphin Kings lauded Greg Vertz at the April 26 awards night. Vertz earned the Pizza Place Trophy as best defenceman and the Steve Hawrysh trophy for most gentlemanly player, totaling 10 goals and 31 assists with 24 penalty minutes across 48 games. He is a Glenboro native and expected to return for a final junior season in September.
Manitoba MP Jack Murta urged Prime Minister Trudeau to activate the Disaster Financial Assistance Program if drought worsens. He warned conditions are the worst in memory and a month more could trigger a major disaster. The plan would fund water trucking, animal care, feed, and help to small communities. Trudeau said the matter would be investigated and funds may be available.
Howard Nixon of Margaret, a longtime farmer and councillor, seeks the Souris Killarney NDP nomination at a May 12 Dunrea Parish Hall convention. A former RC A F member, he has held leadership roles in local boards, health and education, and now serves as vice president of the Westman Regional Development Corporation and the Souris Killarney NDP. He argues for economic freedom under the NDP versus inequality under Conservative rule.
Rain with a touch of hail fell Tuesday afternoon May 3 easing a long spring dry spell for farmers. Thunder accompanied the shower helping nitrogen activation in the soil, an effect longtime growers say is needed for new seed growth.

A birthday party was held at Gordon and Jeanette Jefferies home on Sunday to honor Archie Jefferies on his 75th birthday. Attendees included family members from Saskatoon Glenboro Wawanesa Brandon and Winnipeg with grandson Brian Chalmers unable to attend.
The Association for the Mentally Retarded Pine Creek Branch Austin halts its Flowers of Hope drive due to prohibitive material and postage costs. They note government support covers only staff wages for their Workshop for Mentally Retarded Adults while utilities insurance and client wages rely on service income. They list activities including laundry janitorial work at the Post Office lawn care snow removal and furniture repair. Continued on Page 3.
