The week ranged from a high of minus five on March 3 to a low of minus seventeen on March 2. Daytime average was minus one with a lifetime average of minus thirteen and an overall average minus seven. Precipitation and air temperatures ran eight degrees above normal.
The Westman Winter Games in Glenboro and Wawanesa over March 6 to 8 awarded gold silver and bronze in Basketball Co ed Volleyball hockey ringette badminton and gymnastics. Teams from Killarney Boissevain Brandon Rams Virden Shoal Lake Minnedosa Neepawa Wawanesa and others competed with Brandon Hustlers winning volleyball and Boissevain taking ringette gold as crowds enjoyed openings and social events.
In the Kinsmen Heritage program open class grade seven and eight students competed. Emma Crowson won first place with Kevin Thorn borough and Betty Jones following in second and third. Grade six entries finished with Michael East first and Brent Cullen second, Leanne Jefferies third, Christine Haslen fourth, plus honorable mentions Tammy Vanwynsberghe Colleen Shackel and Toby Penner. The top essay will appear in the paper next week.
Emma Crowson explains why Canada is a free and rich country. She highlights its diverse religions press freedom and immigrant history. The essay notes vast natural resources, water wealth, forestry, prairie provinces breadbasket role, and major industries.
The Hilton Combined 4-H Club met at the Hilton Church with all members and leaders present and several community visitors. They planned a Belmont supper meeting for March 11 and a March canvass with an April 27 Home Ec achievement. Const Terry Buchanan of Killarney RCMP spoke on RCMP help for rural areas.
