Pen Pals Reunite After Four Decades of Letters
Barb Anderson of Cypress River finally met her English pen pal Mavis Bleaken in Gloucester after forty years of correspondence. The pair began writing at age 13 and kept in touch through Christmastime letters while Barb and her husband ran a grocery in Canada. They spent ten days touring England, and Mavis and husband Gordon hint at a Canada visit in 1997.

Spruce Budworm Sprays 12500 Hectares in Lac du Bonnet Region
The Department of Natural Resources sprayed 12 500 hectares of forest near Lac du Bonnet to combat the spruce budworm which feeds on white spruce and balsam fir. Marion Kostiuk won a 45 000 cottage as the major prize in the Great Manitoba Duck Race held June 11 with over 31 000 ducks entered. Cement trucks began work June 15 at the UGG High Throughput Elevator in Souris with a 24 hour seven day schedule and one million plus pounds of reinforcing rod for a 25 020 tonne capacity facility.
