Ag. Rep. Mow Headlands for Ergot Control Across Manitoba

Manitoba and federal agriculture teams urge farmers to mow grass headlands bordering cereal fields to cut ergot spread. Ergot infections in durum wheat and rye rose recently, threatening overseas grain orders. Mowing before flowering, especially brome grasses, in early June is the recommended control. Spruce budworm outbreaks threaten white spruce in Manitoba with defoliation. Cygon 4E and dimethoate 4E are advised for large and small areas respectively, to limit damage and potential tree mortality.
