Nordics Hold First Place After High Scoring Weekend

Glenboro Nordics drew 5 5 at Shilo on January 20 with Vertz brothers and Janz among scorers. They crushed Somerset 11 1 on January 22 led by Greg Vertz with 3 goals 2 assists and Penner North duo contributing. Glenboro leads West Division with 23 points in 14 games. East Division leaders include Mac Gregor with 20 points in 13.

Snow and Wind Hit Glenboro Streets and Rinks

January weather swung from extreme cold to heavy snow as Glenboro faced strong winds. Six inches fell in a weekend, plows struggled to clear roads, Broadway Street froze midwinter drift, and highway crews fought to haul the white load. Glenboro sent three rinks to the MCA bonspiel in Winnipeg January 22 to 29 with mixed results.

Glenboro 4-H Plans Bonspiel Visit and Talks

District 4-H News reports Glenboro 4-H Agriculture Club met January 21 at the school selecting a curling rink for a February 14 bonspiel at Douglas. Members received project books and raffling tickets were discussed. Ron and Terry Jefferies spoke on the Brandon Youth Conference of December 12 to 14, while Kenny Dowd covered a dairy farm trip near Brandon. On January 17 to 14 members attended the Carberry Agriculture Area 4-H bonspiel, played with two game total points.

4-H Homemakers Bonspiel Winners Advancing Plans

Betty Jean Jefferies won the Carberry bonspiel held on the 17th with Rick Hamilton second and Cona Diehl third. Jefferies will skip the rink invited to the Douglas spiel. The next Home makers meeting is February 18. Plan for the Snowflake Tea Bake Sale and Candy Sale on Saturday.

The Manitoba Safety Council weighs reducing deaths from domestic falls, noting falls rival traffic accidents as a leading cause of fatalities and injuries. Cypress River Credit Union annual meeting reports gains

The seventeenth annual meeting in Memorial Hall on January 20 drew 125 members and visitors. Directors supervisors and managers reported assets of 2,710,621.33 with savings at 8.12 percent. New board terms were set and Doug Metcalf named manager effective July 1. A travelogue of Hong Kong Tokyo and the Orient followed.

Holland rink wins Cypress River Ladies Bonspiel

The Cypress River Ladies Bonspiel held January 16 to 18 finished January 21 due to thaw. Twenty four rinks competed in four events. Holland rink led by Margaret Carels defeated Gail Aubry’s team in the first event. Marg Longmire won the second event, Emily McLennan the third, and Irene Porter the fourth. Edith Davidson's four some claimed the Bonspiel prize. Janet Martins won the largest end.

Glenboro High School to Start Second Semester Feb 2

This week ends the first semester with exams Wednesday and Thursday and January 30 as an admin day for marks. The new semester begins February 2 with all classes resuming. Science Fair is canceled but projects may proceed to Brandon's Western Manitoba Fair. March of Dimes drive collects include Mr. Anderson 26.86, Mrs. Greenlay 3.85, Mrs. Kentner 3.00. Panthers host Pilot Mound February 4 at 7 p.m. All invited.

Murta to Attend Bilateral Discussions Between Canada and U S

Canadian MP Jack Murta will join a delegation of Parliamentarians in the United States to discuss irritants between the two countries. Topics include coastal pollution auto industry energy and water treaties with focus on agriculture eggs beef and grain and the Garrison Dam project in North Dakota.
