Wendy Davidson Receives Appreciation Award in Cypress River

Wendy Davidson of Glenboro is honored with an Appreciation Award presented by Maurice Sveinson of Cypress River. Sveinson represented the Cypress River Junior Rifle Club the Wildlife Association and the Hunter Safety Program to thank Wendy for twelve years as Cypress River instructor. Presentation occurred on December 28 1985.

Friends of Spruce Woods Meet in Glenboro December 1985

A local gathering of the Friends of Spruce Woods in Glenboro on December 17, 1985 discussed ideas for park activities and cooperative efforts. Roger Schroeder from the Brandon regional office presented slides and led a discussion on involving the group with park extras and a potential Criddle Collection move to Spruce Woods. Another meeting is planned for January 15 in Brandon.

Glenboro Ambulance Service to Run Voluntarily in 1986

The Glenboro Health District will operate the ambulance service starting January 1 1986 on a volunteer basis. Volunteers are recruited and trained, coordinated by Moray Jamieson with two on call at all times. Residents may contact Jamieson or Jim Westwood for information.

Manitoba Hydro Announces 2.8 Percent Rate Increase

Manitoba Hydro will raise electricity rates by 2.8 percent effective April 1 1986. Chair Marc Eliesen says this keeps Manitoba’s rates the lowest in Canada and beats inflation, with net revenues of 19.6 million and a reserve boost to sustain rate stability under low water. A typical residential bill could rise about 80 cents monthly for 700 kWh usage.

Shirley Eikhard Live Returns to Holland Centre

Pop country singer Shirley Eikhard returns to the Holland Community Centre in Tiger Hills on January 18 1986 after a 1982 performance left audiences wanting more. A TV and radio veteran with JUNO wins in 1972 and 1973 she has toured from Vancouver to the Middle East and released four albums with a new single due January 1 1986.

Former Gazette Publisher Frank Presunka Dies at 77

Frank Presunka of Glenboro died December 30 1985 at Glenboro Hospital after a long cancer battle. He led the Glenboro Gazette from 1949 to 1967 and introduced mechanized typesetting. After retiring in 1982 he wrote occasional Gazette pieces including a November 20 1985 nostalgia on school picnics. Sympathy to wife Edith and sons Dallas and Reid.

National Rural Youth Committee Formed in Canada

Delegates from eight provinces at the Winnipeg conference agreed to create a national body to improve rural youth organization across Canada. The plan includes a communications network, a support resource role for provinces lacking groups, and ongoing national youth conferences. Representatives named include Ken Kingdon Manitoba Glenn Weatherall Ontario Janet Tingley New Brunswick Drew McKinstry Nova Scotia Dean Shier Saskatchewan Stephen Went Alberta Laura Wigham British Columbia and Lesley Drake Prince Edward Island.
