Community meeting attendance expected light as speakers outline Nellie McClung life and history at the United Church. Participants are urged to remember the date and join the discussion.
Open to all entered rinks, featuring prizes including Hostess Chairs donated by the Curling Club. Wool Point Blankets donated by Frederickson & Co. and Curling Club. TV Table Sets donated by Drs. R. G. and J. P. Horton and Curling Club. Stools donated by Earl McKellar MLA.
Rinks drop one test as teams list items from co op suppliers. Thermos Chests Co-op and Lancrossi Shirts Foord Kelcey’s Men’s Shop supply curlers including Glenboro Curling Club. Chrome Trays from Rawlings Hardware and C. C. Pyrex Coffee Makers featured with Einarson Seed & Feed and C. C.
Donated items include lawn chairs from Ghentions Cidite Club, a table clock set by Manitoba Hydro, and steak knives from F. Presunka and D. McKay. Donations also list Glenboro Bakery and Curling Chub as contributors to the effort.
Glenboro Chamber of Commerce and Curling Club present four Dreambed chairs and four sportsman lanterns donated through Canada Packers Ltd and Marshall-Wells. Electric mixers also listed with C. C. involvement, along with four stools donated by E. Otto and the Curling Club.
An obscure report notes multiple local activities including an oven to rinks event, a Chamber of Commerce gathering, hotel event participation, and a curling club display. Donations include picnic hampers by TPL and various clock and cake cover items from local firms.
The record notes an aggregate for the two major events with the greatest number of wins excluding extra series. Four individual trophies were donated by Glenboro Motors and Wallis Avencies. Special prizes include first beer end report and four gallons of anti freeze donated by McDowd and Cliff's Esso Service.
The Glenboro ladies bonspiel ended after three days with 44 rinks entering the event. Gwen Dell’s rink won the top prize, defeating Treherne in the final. Second, third, and fourth place teams came from Wawanesa Greenway Baldur and Holland, with additional event winners from Glenboro Holland and Belmont among others.
Bru notes Joyce Rigaux of the University of Manitoba spent mid-term break with her parents Mr and Mrs Hubert Rigaux returning to studies on Monday. Herb Wytinck of Winnipeg visited Saturday with his brother Mr and Mrs Ed Wytinck.
The Glenboro branch reports $164.65 raised for the March of Dimes, nearly double last year. Receipts will be forwarded to donors by the C.G.T. provincial headquarters.
The Treesbank club held a three event bonspiel with sixteen rinks. In the first event Terry Everard Gary Everard Mervyn Dixon and Carol Clark defeated Allan Nichol’s Wa wanesa rink. Morley Cullen and Morley Rome placed third and fourth. Second event winners were Jack Outhwaite Ed Lyall Rendell Atkinson and R J Farough. Third event winners were Jim Cullen Lloyd Bell Morley Leachman and Eric Sundell. Raymer Brown praised for ice work. Treesbank ladies fed curlers throughout the week.
The Glenboro 57th bonspiel opened with remarks from Harvey Hamilton and Mayor A L Clarke. Reeve Martin Wertz and F C Beech performed the opening stone as 70 rinks compete across six events and nine sheets of ice. Participants include clubs from Glenboro and Stockett area towns with teams from Cypress River Belmont Baldur Treherne Nesbitt Treesbank and others. Jim Wishart of Portage la Prairie manages the draw. lunches are provided by Glenboro and Patricia church groups. icemakers Leo Desroch ers Harold Hallson Walter Drinkwitter and Chas Steer listed.
Best wishes go to Mrs A L Clarke who underwent major surgery in the Winnipeg General Hospital. Mrs Clarke will be hospitalized for several weeks. Mr and Mrs M Braybrook Jim Joel and Donna Joel of Winnipeg spent the weekend at the home of their parents Mr and Mrs William Joel. Mr and Mrs Arman Frederick son of Winnipeg are visiting relatives during the Glenboro bonspiel. Mrs Jessie Wheeler of Winnipeg spent the weekend with Mr and Mrs Frank Presunka.
The Glenboro Chamber asks Winnipeg Canada Packers for a conference date to discuss rebuilding the Glenboro Creamery lost to fire on February 10. The editorial pleads for loyalty from producers and consumers to keep the dairy industry intact and support Mr. William Oliphent and his company as the plant remains a cream and egg receiving station during the recovery period.
Mrs Jas Leader visits Dauphin for weeks while Mr and Mrs Germain tour Winnipeg to see Mrs Germains father A Israel. Congratulations to Mesdames W Anderson K Sampson W Brown and Jas Graham who placed third in the fourth event. Curlers included Carole Barr Sandra Graham Ruby Vane Ruth and Dorothy Dewart Messrs Bailey Barr Blain Outhwaite Rutherford Rolfe. Ken Brown of Dauphin visits parents and plays in the Glenboro event. Mary Steer of Winnipeg visits Mr and Mrs A Steer. Mr and Mrs J Fraser and boys of Souris visit Wes Brown. H McKinnon spends a week in Winnipeg.
The third regular Tiger Hills School Division meeting, hosted by Inspector and Mrs. W. S. Lockhart, approved new fittings for Treherne High School including a drinking fountain and hot water in the lab. Trustees discussed the building program and Rathwell high school, with a budget debate planned for February 18.
The Lisgar scene shows Social Credit nominating George Loepipky for Carman area seats with meetings planned March 1 and March 2 in Holland where Robert Thompson will speak. Liberals eye Manitou nomination February 25 with possible contenders Fred Westwood Bruce McKenzie Ken Hartwell. Conservatives expect Geo Muir to run again as Tory and NDP camps quiet.
Nellie McClung Story in Pictures a film about the famous author now shown to over 50 groups in 12 months comes to United Church Glenboro on Monday February 25 at 8 p.m. under Glenboro Film Council sponsorship with Mel McMullen in charge.
