Doug Elliott Shines on Defence for Westman Selects '79 in Minneapolis

Doug Elliott, a Glenboro Bantams defenceman and son of Roger and Melba Elliott, joined the Westman Selects '79 in a July 30 to August 6 tournament in Minneapolis. The event featured 98 teams from seven age groups across four arenas, with Canada and the U S teams, and Czech Republic representation. The Major Bantam division had 12 squads. Westman finished eighth in round robin play and exited after a playoff loss, marking their third tour appearance and first playoff appearance.

Whales on Exhibit in New York by Peter Sawatzky

Peter Sawatzky of Glenboro has a beluga sculpture accepted for the National Sculpture Society 61st Annual Exhibition in New York City. From about 500 entries, 53 works were chosen for display at the National Sculpture Society Gallery in the Americas Tower from September 27 to November 25. A photo appears on page 5 of The Gazette.

Dan Willms Competes in Elite Manitoba Midget Volleyball Tour

Fifteen year old Dan Willms of Glenboro played for one of two Manitoba midget volleyball teams in the Western Canada Elite Midget Tournament at North Battleford Saskatchewan August 5 to 7 1994. His team finished sixth among eight boys teams while Manitoba’s other team finished fourth. Dan is a member of the Glenboro Panthers and is the son of Neil and Grace Willms.

Glenboro Ladies Golf Tourney yields low scores and wins

The Glenboro Ladies Golf Tournament on August 10 drew 142 players under excellent conditions. Champion Lynda Yablonski of Carberry posted 84, with runner up Charlotte Evanyshyn of Brandon at 86 and Tena Alders of Carberry at 88.

Valerie Kovar Turns 90 in Glenboro Birthday Tribute

Valerie Kovar of Glenboro celebrated her 90th birthday on July 29, 1994. Born to Voltner in Pitin, Czechoslovakia, she has a large family including husband Stanley, three children Ella Green, Mary Chanka, and Rudy, five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. The Kovars emigrated in 1929, retired in 1972, and Valerie remains active in her home, baking puff pastry rolls, doing embroidery and cutwork, and tending roses.
